Know what to expect at your appointment for a Dental Cleaning

A quick overview of a cleaning appointment at Heidi Sprowls DDS

At a dental cleaning appointment, you can expect a thorough examination of your teeth and gums by your Heidi Sprowls DDS, including a professional cleaning by a dental hygienist to remove plaque and tartar buildup, a polishing of your teeth to remove surface stains, and a review of your oral health history with potential X-rays taken if needed (4 every 12 months, 18 every 5 years); we also take a yearly oral health scan (not an x-ray) to see any wear and to keep a record of your teeth. Dr. Sprowls will check for cavities, gum disease, and any other oral health concerns, and may offer advice on improving your brushing and flossing techniques.

Time to expect for appointment:

If you come in 2-3 times a year plan for 1 hour

If this is your first visit to our office plan for 1 1/2 hours

What to expect after a dental cleaning:

In most scenarios there is little to no issues after a cleaning, but depending on the amount of tarter we need to remove, patients may experience some discomfort with their gums. If you experience any discomfort with your gums you can use a warm salt water mixture 8 oz of warm water with a teaspoon of salt to swish and spit.

Key steps during a dental cleaning appointment:

Medical history review: Your hygienist will ask about any recent changes in your health or medications. Please make us aware of any changes

Scaling: Removal of plaque and tartar build-up from your teeth using specialized tools.

Polishing: Smoothing the surface of your teeth to remove stains.

Flossing: Cleaning between your teeth with dental floss.

X-rays: The ADA recommends taking 4 bitewings every twelve months and a Full mouth series (18) every five years. X-rays show in between teeth where we cannot visually see and by taking them we can try to catch small things before they turn into a bigger issue.

Dental health scan: We do this once a year. The scanner takes photos of all of your teeth, it also shows wear on teeth, where your bite may be heavy , how your teeth come together, and can even show you what your teeth would look like if they were straight.

Fluoride treatment: Your hygienist may apply a fluoride treatment to help strengthen your teeth and help prevent future decay.

Oral hygiene instructions: Your Hygienist will provide feedback on your brushing and flossing techniques and offer suggestions for improvement.

Oral exam: Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums for signs of cavities, gum disease, or other issues using a dental mirror and probe.
